Overview
Every acrylic print we produce at Art Smiley Biz starts with the same question - what's the best way to get this image onto this material in a way that's going to look extraordinary and last?
For the vast majority of our work - standard prints, framed prints, backlit installations, standoff mounted pieces, large format walls - the answer is UV printing directly onto acrylic. And there's a reason it's the dominant technology in premium acrylic printing across the UAE and globally.
It produces results that genuinely couldn't be achieved any other way. The colours are richer. The detail is sharper. The adhesion between ink and substrate is more permanent. And the whole process - from file to finished print - is more consistent and controllable than older printing methods.
But most people commissioning acrylic prints don't actually know what UV printing is or why it matters. Which is fair - you shouldn't need to be a print technician to get a great result. But understanding what's happening when we produce your print helps explain why the quality is what it is. And why you should care about the technology your printer uses.
What Is UV Printing on Acrylic?
That curing process is the key difference between UV printing and conventional inkjet or solvent printing. In traditional inkjet printing, the ink dries through evaporation - a slower, less controlled process that can result in ink absorption into the substrate, slight colour shift as the ink dries, and a surface that remains somewhat vulnerable to scratching or moisture until fully cured.
UV printing doesn't work that way. The ink cures almost instantaneously when the UV light hits it - polymerising from a liquid into a solid in a fraction of a second. The result is an ink layer that is physically bonded to the acrylic surface, dimensionally stable, and immediately durable.
What does that mean in practical terms for your acrylic print? Several things.
Colour accuracy. Because there's no drying time during which colours can shift, what comes out of a UV printer is extraordinarily close to what went in. The colour profile of your image is preserved with a fidelity that other printing technologies struggle to match.
Sharpness and detail. UV printing produces extremely fine dot patterns - finer than most alternative processes - which translates directly into sharpness and detail retention in the finished print. Texture in a photograph, fine lines in a calligraphy piece, subtle tonal gradations in an abstract artwork - all come through with clarity that's genuinely impressive.
Durability. UV-cured inks are harder and more resistant to physical damage than conventionally dried inks. Scratch resistance, moisture resistance, and resistance to UV-induced fading are all significantly better with UV-printed acrylic than with other print methods. For the UAE climate - where interiors experience significant temperature variation and high ambient UV levels - this durability genuinely matters over the life of the print.
Vibrancy. The way UV-cured inks interact with the surface of acrylic - and with the light that passes through and reflects off the acrylic - produces a colour saturation and depth that makes acrylic prints appear almost self-illuminated. It's a quality that's hard to describe accurately and immediately obvious in person.
UV printing
ultraviolet printing - is a direct-to-substrate printing process where UV-curable inks are deposited onto the surface of the acrylic sheet and immediately cured by exposure to ultraviolet light.
What We Print Using UV Technology
At Art Smiley Biz, UV printing on acrylic is the production method behind most of our product range.
Photography. Personal photographs, professional photography, fine art photography reproductions. UV printing on acrylic is the format that serious photographers choose for a reason - it does their work justice in a way few other display methods can.
Artwork and illustrations. Original paintings digitally reproduced, digital illustrations, graphic art. The colour accuracy of UV printing means reproductions are faithful to the original in a way that matters to artists and collectors.
Islamic calligraphy and Arabic art. The sharpness and contrast of UV printing makes it ideal for calligraphy - the precision of the letterforms is preserved completely, and the depth of the acrylic adds a presence to the piece that enhances the art form.
Corporate and brand graphics. Logo walls, brand installations, motivational art for office spaces. UV printing on acrylic produces brand colours accurately and consistently - important for corporate clients who take their visual identity seriously.
Custom designs. Anything you can create digitally, we can UV print onto acrylic. The versatility of the process means there are very few design or image types that don't translate beautifully to the medium.
Acrylic Sheet Quality Matters Too
UV printing technology is only as good as the substrate it's printing onto. We use premium quality acrylic sheets - consistent optical clarity, consistent surface quality, consistent thickness - because variations in sheet quality show up in the finished print in ways that compromise the result.
Cheap acrylic has inconsistencies in its optical properties - slight variations in clarity or colour cast across the sheet that become visible in a finished print. Our sheets are sourced for consistency and quality, which is part of why our prints look the way they do.
Thickness and Size Options
UV printed acrylic is available in the full range of thicknesses we offer - 2mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm - and in custom sizes up to our maximum sheet dimensions. For very large installations requiring multiple panels, we ensure colour consistency across panels by printing them in the same production run under the same calibrated conditions.
The Environmental Consideration
UV printing is a cleaner process than solvent-based printing - the inks don't contain volatile organic compounds that evaporate during drying, and the UV curing process produces no solvent emissions. For clients and businesses with environmental commitments, this is worth knowing.
Why the Printing Technology Behind Your Acrylic Print Matters
UV printing on premium acrylic, done correctly with properly calibrated equipment and quality-controlled processes, produces results that look extraordinary immediately and continue to look extraordinary years later. That's what we deliver at Art Smiley Biz - and it's why clients come back to us for their next project and the one after that.
Here's the thing
when you're commissioning a premium acrylic print for a space you care about, the technology your printer uses isn't just a technical detail. It directly determines the quality, durability, and longevity of the result you get on your wall.
