That small gap
a few centimetres of air between the back of the print and the surface behind it - creates a shadow. And that shadow does something interesting to the whole piece. It adds depth. It makes the print feel less like it's hanging and more like it's floating. Like it belongs to the space rather than just being attached to it.
What Are Standoff Mounts?
They're installed at the corners of the print - sometimes with additional central fixings for larger pieces - and they do two things simultaneously. They secure the print firmly and safely to the wall. And they create that distinctive floating effect that sets standoff-mounted pieces apart from everything else.
The standoffs themselves are part of the visual. They're visible - intentionally so. A row of four brushed stainless steel standoffs at the corners of a large acrylic print looks considered and architectural. It says this piece was installed with intention, not just hammered onto a wall.

also called barrel mounts or boss mounts - are small cylindrical metal fixings, typically made from stainless steel or brushed aluminium, that attach to the wall and hold the acrylic print a fixed distance away from the surface.

Why Standoff Mounts Work So Well with Acrylic

Acrylic is a rigid, relatively heavy material - especially at 6mm, 8mm, or 10mm thickness. It doesn't flex or bow the way thinner materials might. That rigidity means standoff mounts hold it perfectly flat, perfectly level, with no risk of the print warping away from the fixings over time.
The transparency of acrylic also interacts with the shadow created by the standoff gap in a visually interesting way. A Note on Sizing and Weight
We'll discuss this during the quoting process so there are no surprises on installation day.
For very large standoff-mounted prints
anything above roughly 150cm in either dimension - we assess the wall construction before installation to ensure the fixing points are anchored appropriately. Acrylic at 8mm or 10mm thickness and large scale has meaningful weight, and the installation needs to account for that properly.
