The Basics
What is acrylic printing?
Acrylic printing is the process of producing a high-resolution image on an acrylic sheet - either by printing directly onto the surface using UV printing technology, or by bonding a printed image to the back of the acrylic using the face mount (Diasec) method. The result is a glossy, vibrant, frameless wall art piece with extraordinary clarity and depth. It's the format you see in premium hotel lobbies, corporate offices, and high-end residential interiors across Dubai and the UAE.
How is acrylic printing different from canvas printing?
Several ways. Acrylic produces a glossy surface - canvas is typically matte or semi-matte. Acrylic is rigid - canvas flexes slightly. Acrylic preserves fine detail and colour accuracy more effectively than canvas. Acrylic is more durable in the UAE climate - resistant to humidity, temperature variation, and UV fading in ways that canvas isn't. And honestly - acrylic just looks more premium. Most clients who've tried both formats don't go back to canvas for anything they care about.
What is face mount acrylic (Diasec)?
Face mounting - the Diasec method - is the premium tier of acrylic printing. Instead of printing directly onto the acrylic surface, the image is printed onto photographic paper and then bonded to the back face of a clear acrylic sheet using optical adhesive. The result is extraordinary - the image appears to float just beneath the surface of the acrylic, with a depth and luminosity that direct printing can't quite match. It's the format serious photographers and high-end hospitality clients choose when quality is the absolute priority. It costs more than direct UV printing - and it's worth it for the right project.
Is acrylic printing waterproof?
Yes. The acrylic material itself is impervious to moisture, and UV-cured inks are highly resistant to water and humidity. Acrylic prints can be cleaned with damp cloths and most standard cleaning solutions without risk of damage to the print or the surface. For healthcare clients especially - this cleanability is one of the key practical advantages of acrylic over other wall art formats.
Sizes, Thickness and Formats
What sizes do you print?
We print across a very wide range of sizes - from small personal pieces of around 30cm to large format installations that can run to several metres in dimension. For installations that exceed our maximum single-sheet print size, we produce multi-panel pieces that are installed adjacently on the wall. We'll advise on panel configuration and join placement as part of the project planning process.
What acrylic thicknesses do you offer?
We work with 2mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm acrylic sheets. The right thickness depends on the size of the print and the aesthetic you're going for. Smaller prints can work well at 2mm or 4mm - lighter, more cost-effective. For larger pieces, 6mm is a solid middle ground. For statement pieces and gallery-quality installations, 8mm or 10mm has a substantial, premium feel that thinner sheets don't quite achieve.
What formats do you offer?
Standard frameless, framed, backlit LED, standoff mounted, layered multi-layer, large format, split multi-panel, and face mount Diasec. Each format suits different spaces and aesthetic requirements - browse the format pages on our site for detailed descriptions, or contact us and we'll recommend the right format for your specific project.
Can I get a custom size?
Yes. We don't restrict clients to standard sizes. Tell us the dimensions you need - whether that's driven by the wall space, the image proportions, or a specific design requirement - and we'll produce to those dimensions.
Image and Quality
What image resolution do I need?
The general rule is 150-300 DPI at the final print size. In practical terms - an image from a modern professional camera or a recent high-end smartphone will typically support print sizes up to around 100cm in the longer dimension without perceptible sharpness loss. Beyond that, careful upscaling can extend the usable size range - but we'll always assess your specific image and tell you honestly what it can support before production begins.
Can you use a photo from my phone?
Often yes - modern smartphones produce surprisingly high-resolution images that support meaningful print sizes. The key variables are the phone model, the shooting conditions, and how the image was saved. Send us the image and we'll assess it. We'd rather tell you upfront if there's a resolution concern than produce a print that doesn't meet your expectations.
What file formats do you accept?
We work with JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and PDF files. For artwork and design files, we can also work with AI, EPS, and PSD files. If you're not sure whether your file will work, just send it - we'll check it and let you know.
Do you colour correct images before printing?
We review every image before printing and flag any obvious colour issues - significant casts, blown highlights, crushed shadows - that would affect the quality of the print. For clients who want their image colour corrected or retouched before printing, we offer this as an additional service. We'll always ask before making any changes to your image.
Can you print black and white images?
Absolutely. Black and white photography on acrylic is genuinely stunning - the tonal range and contrast that UV printing on acrylic delivers makes monochrome images look extraordinary. A lot of our portrait and fine art photography clients specifically choose black and white for their acrylic prints.
Pricing and Turnaround
How much does acrylic printing cost in Dubai?
Pricing depends on size, thickness, format, and quantity. A small standard acrylic print starts from a few hundred dirhams. Large format pieces, backlit installations, and face mount Diasec prints at significant scale are priced accordingly. We provide clear, itemised quotes for every project - no hidden charges, no vague estimates that balloon later. The best way to get an accurate price is to tell us your specific requirements and we'll quote you directly.
Do you offer bulk or corporate pricing?
Yes. For corporate clients, hotel groups, developers, and other clients commissioning significant quantities - we offer pricing that reflects the volume fairly. Contact us with the full scope of your project and we'll provide a structured bulk quote.
How long does production take?
Standard production turnaround is typically 3 to 7 business days depending on the format and size. Face mount Diasec prints and backlit installations take slightly longer - typically 7 to 10 business days. Large format and multi-panel projects are discussed individually based on scope. For projects with tight deadlines, discuss this upfront - we can often accommodate expedited production for urgent requirements.
Do you deliver and install?
Yes - delivery and professional installation is part of our standard service across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, and the wider UAE. We provide all mounting hardware and fixtures. Installation is done by our own team - not subcontracted - to maintain the quality and consistency our clients expect.
Installation and Care
How are acrylic prints mounted on the wall?
Depending on the format - flush wall mount with concealed fixings, standoff mounts that float the print off the wall, or French cleat systems for larger and heavier pieces. We specify and install the most appropriate mounting system for each print based on size, weight, wall material, and aesthetic requirements.
What wall types can you install on?
All of them. Concrete, drywall, block, glass - we've installed acrylic prints on every wall type found in UAE construction. The fixing approach varies by wall material and we assess this before installation to ensure the fixings are appropriate for the specific wall.
How do I clean an acrylic print?
Gently, with a soft microfibre cloth - either dry or lightly dampened with water or a mild cleaning solution. Avoid abrasive cloths or cleaning products that contain solvents or ammonia - these can affect the surface of the acrylic over time. For healthcare facilities with specific cleaning protocols, we can advise on compatible cleaning products.
How long will an acrylic print last?
A well-produced acrylic print, properly installed and reasonably maintained, should last for decades without perceptible deterioration. UV-cured inks are highly resistant to fading. The acrylic material itself doesn't yellow or warp with age under normal indoor conditions. The face mount Diasec process adds an additional layer of protection between the image and the environment. Acrylic is one of the most durable wall art formats available - which is a significant part of why serious clients choose it.
Can acrylic prints be repaired if damaged?
Minor surface scratches on acrylic can sometimes be buffed out with specialist acrylic polishing compounds. More significant damage - cracks, chips, deep scratches - typically can't be repaired invisibly and the piece would need to be replaced. We keep records of all completed projects and can reproduce replacement pieces to exact original specifications.
Working With Art Smiley Biz
Do I need to come to your studio?
Not at all - most of our projects are managed entirely remotely, with images and briefs submitted by WhatsApp or email, proofs reviewed and approved digitally, and installation arranged by appointment. That said - for significant projects, particularly backlit and layered formats that are difficult to fully appreciate from photographs - a studio visit is worth it. Contact us to arrange one.
Can you help me choose the right format for my space?
Absolutely - and this is genuinely something we enjoy doing. Tell us about your space - the wall dimensions, the aesthetic, the image you want to print, the budget - and we'll give you honest recommendations about what format and size will produce the best result. We'd rather spend time helping you make the right decision upfront than have you end up with something that doesn't feel right on your wall.
What if I'm not happy with the finished print?
It hasn't happened often - but if a finished print doesn't match the approved proof or doesn't meet the quality standard we commit to, we fix it. Reprint, re-install, whatever is required. We don't hide behind fine print when something isn't right. The quality standard is the quality standard - and it applies after the invoice as much as before it.
