Overview
Most wall art is flat. That's just the reality of it. A photograph, a painting, a canvas print - however beautiful, however well produced - exists in two dimensions. You look at it. It looks back. That's the transaction.
Layered acrylic prints break that transaction entirely.
Because layered acrylic isn't flat. It has genuine physical depth. Multiple acrylic sheets, each carrying part of the image, stacked at different distances from the wall to create a piece that exists in actual three-dimensional space. You don't just look at it - you look into it. And as you move around it, the layers shift relative to each other, the shadows change, the depth perception plays tricks on you in the best possible way.
It's the kind of wall art that makes people stop mid-conversation to ask about it. And at Art Smiley Biz, it's one of the most technically satisfying things we produce.
How Layered Acrylic Printing Actually Works
Let me walk you through the process - because understanding it makes the result even more impressive.
The artwork or photograph is first separated into distinct layers - foreground, mid-ground, background, and sometimes additional depth layers depending on the complexity of the image. Each layer is printed onto its own premium acrylic sheet using UV printing technology, with careful attention to how the elements on each sheet will interact with the layers in front of and behind it.
The sheets are then mounted at different depths from the wall - typically using custom standoff systems that keep each layer precisely spaced. The gaps between layers create real shadow and real depth. When light hits the piece from the front, those shadows shift. When you move, your perspective on the layers changes.
The result is something that genuinely doesn't look like any other wall art format. Not a trick of printing. Not an illusion created by the image itself. Actual physical depth, built into the piece from the ground up.
It's involved to produce correctly
which is why a lot of printing companies in the UAE either don't offer it or don't execute it well. We've done enough of these to know exactly where the technical pitfalls are and how to avoid them.
What Works Well as Layered Acrylic Art
Not every image is ideally suited to the layered format - and we'll always tell you honestly if we think a different format would serve your image better. But certain subjects are genuinely extraordinary in layered acrylic.
Cityscapes and architecture. Dubai's skyline, Abu Dhabi's Corniche, architectural photography with strong foreground and background separation - these translate beautifully into layered acrylic. The depth of the original scene becomes literal physical depth in the piece.
Nature and landscapes. Forest scenes, desert compositions, ocean photography. Images with clear depth - something close, something further away, something in the distance - are natural candidates for the layered format.
Abstract art. Custom-designed abstract compositions built specifically for layered acrylic production. This is where designers and artists get really creative - designing for the medium rather than adapting an existing image to it.
Islamic calligraphy and geometric art. Calligraphy or geometric patterns on one layer, with background elements or decorative borders on deeper layers. The combination of the art form and the dimensional format is genuinely stunning.
Portraits and figures. Subject on one layer, background on another - or multiple background layers creating a sense of atmospheric depth behind the subject. Particularly effective for statement portrait pieces in residential interiors.
Brand and corporate art. Company logos or brand visuals with dimensional depth. Reception walls, boardrooms, brand experience spaces. A layered acrylic brand installation does something a flat logo print simply can't.
Sizes, Layers & Specifications
We work with two, three, and four-layer compositions depending on the complexity of the design and the scale of the piece. More layers means more depth - but also more technical precision required in both the print separation and the mounting.
Acrylic sheet thickness for layered prints is typically 3mm or 5mm per layer - lighter than our thicker single-sheet options, which helps manage the overall weight of the assembled piece. Layer spacing is designed specifically for each project based on the image and the intended viewing distance.
Custom sizes are available across our full range. We'll advise on what works best for the specific image and installation space.
Installation
Layered acrylic installation is a precise job - the alignment of the layers, the evenness of the spacing, the security of the mounting system. Our installation team handles every layered acrylic project directly, across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, and the wider UAE.
We don't rush it. Getting a layered piece perfectly aligned on the wall is worth taking the time to do right - and we always do.
This Is a Statement Piece
Let's be direct. Layered acrylic is not an everyday wall art choice. It's a statement. It's the piece that defines a space, that guests ask about, that clients notice immediately. If you've got a wall that deserves something genuinely extraordinary - this is it.
Not every wall needs a statement piece. But every impressive space has at least one.
